Forthcoming DCA Events

Derbyshire Chess Association

This year, the Derbyshire Chess Association celebrates 75 years since its inauguration. The association is affiliated to the English Chess Federation (ECF). The Association runs the Derby and District Chess League as well as a number of other chess competitions in Derbyshire.

Any Chess Club interested in entering a team in the Derby and District Chess League should make contact through the Officers and Contacts page. All standards of play are catered for.

Anyone interested in joining a Derbyshire Chess Club for social and/or competitive chess can find details of clubs on the Chess Clubs.

CHANGE OF WEBSITE HOST

As from 24th May, the BT Community Webkit service which currently hosts this website is being withdrawn and the website will then be hosted by Enablecom on their cloud based server. The content will remain unchanged but the website address will change from derbyshirechess.btck.co.uk to derbyshirechess.enablecomcloud.com.

The changeover will involve downloading the content of the website and sending it to the new host so that the website can be recreated. While this is happening, it won’t be possible to update the website but I don’t expect it to be a lengthy process. Apologies in advance for the inconvenience.

North East Midlands Chess Club

A message from Dylan Meyer:

Welcome to the online tournaments that I have set up exclusively for chess club players from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. We now have members from around the world that have links to this area.

I started organising tournaments in March 2020, when all the chess clubs closed. Even if you have not played online before, it is a great way to play chess and chat with your chess club friends.

When you have a lichess.org account, click to join the ‘North East Midlands Chess Club team’. To submit your join request you will also have to make a simple checkmate move. This is so that lichess knows you are not a robot.

When your request to join has been accepted by the team, you will receive team messages and be able to join in the team tournaments.

Monday 15th of February 7pm, Arena tournament, 120mins, 7mins +3 secs, lichess.

On Thursdays, alternating week by week, the tournaments are Swiss or Arena.

Thursday 7pm, Rapid Swiss, 4 Rounds, 3min interval, 15mins +2 secs, lichess.

At the end of February we plan to have our 3rd team match vs a team from Israel, Jerusalem.

Arena team battle, NE Midlands vs Jeruchess (Jerusalem), 7mins +3 secs, 90mins, lichess.

Final Results

Open

Minor

Congratulations to the winners, Kevin Dalley and Garry Sands who both went through their respective sections unbeaten. Shambavi Hariharan also deserves a special mention. She lost her first round game but then reeled off 4 consecutive wins. Shambavi plays for Notts Juniors and is obviously making rapid progress in her playing strength. She was also awarded best performance trophy in the recent 4NCL under 1700 category.

New Tournament

I believe that most, if not all, players have enjoyed the experience of playing in the recent DCA events and I encourage anyone who has not been involved previously to enter. There is no doubt that playing online is slightly different to ‘over the board’ chess but all of the elements of posing and attempting to solve chess problems against an opponent, are the same.

The new tournament will:

• be played online on lichess

• consist of one Open group for the purposes of pairing but with 2 or 3 grade limited sections to give everyone something to play for

• use accelerated pairings to minimize grading mismatches.

• be played every fortnight

• use a time control of 45 min + 15s

• start on Wednesday 26th of May

• consist of 8 rounds but anyone can opt out of a round by notifying me before the next draw (½ point bye)

The competition is aimed at members of Derbyshire Chess Association clubs. If you wish to take part, send an email to dw333chess@gmail.com which includes your name, chess club and Lichess ID.

Entries must be submitted by Saturday 22nd of May.

All entrants accept that they must not use any aids which could affect their choice of move.

The first round draw will be circulated on the 22nd of May.

2019/20 League Results

The final tables have been determined by the percentage of points gained from those available. For example Belper B played 8 matches and scored 12 points from a possible maximum of 16. Their percentage success rate is therefore 75%

This makes the champions of each division Breadsall, Belper B, Lichfield B and Rolls Royce C. No decisions have been made regarding promotion and relegation since it likely that the number of teams entering the league in the next season may be significantly different.

2019/20 Cup and Plate

After consultation with the teams involved it was agreed that the finals would be played when over the board play becomes possible.

2020/21 Results and Grading

The ECF now list grades as four digit ELO grades which will be updated monthly although ratings are not changing at the moment because no qualifying chess is taking place. There is also a new ECF online rating but I must confess to knowing nothing about where the results come from. The biggest resulting change is that results need to be returned to ECF within 14 days from the end of the month in which they are played.

Decisions need to be made on how results, league tables etc. are to be handled as they will need to be entered on the ECF League Management System. I am happy to keep grades up-to-date monthly if it is deemed necessary.

Derbyshire Chess History

The History section is being expanded with more articles about club histories and items of interest from the long-defunct Derbyshire Chess Magazine and other sources.

The following pages currently exist:

  • Exhibitions
  • Belper Chess Club
  • Bemrose School Chess Club
  • Burton Chess Club
  • Derby Chess Club
  • Rolls-Royce Chess Club
  • Chesterfield Chess Club (this page just gives the link for the excellent Chesterfield club website)
  • Long Eaton Chess Club
  • Derbyshire Chess Magazine and other sources of historical information
  • Tournaments (this is a new page which will include details of tournaments played in Derbyshire over the years)

Any contributions will be very welcome and should be sent to mickalderson@btinternet.com.
